Red Chris is a 30,000 tonne per day open pit copper mine located in northwest British Columbia, 80 kilometres south of Dease Lake. The Red Chris property comprised of the main and south claim groups covers a total area of 29,067 hectares. The Red Chris mine is operated by Red Chris Development Company Ltd. (RCDC), a subsidiary of Imperial.
Commissioning of the mine commenced in late 2014. Mill operations began February 15, 2015 and the first copper concentrate was produced on February 17, 2015. The mine achieved the accounting criteria for commercial production on July 1, 2015. On July 27, 2015 RCDC and the Tahltan Nation signed an Impact, Benefit and Co-Management Agreement which provides the basis for partnership between the Tahltan people and Red Chris for the life of the mine.
Current mining activities are focused in the East and Main zones, with the bulk of the mill feed coming from the Main zone. The 2016 production target is 85-90 million pounds copper and 45-50,000 ounces gold.
